Step Length

Definition of the real step lengths showed to be quite difficult. Three different approaches have been discussed and will be presented on the following page.

Additionally an overview about used criteria on identifying the time span of a step will be given.

Experiments

First: Stride Length Measurement

As a first experiment we recorded several straight walks with the Xsens MVN system and digital video cameras.

Second: Calibration Testing

In a second experiment we tested the calibration of the Xsens MVN system with new recordings.

plotMVNXData

plotMVNXData is a command line tool written in R that will extract the data from a given mvnx data file and generate several diagrams.

calcStepLength

calcStepLength is a command line tool written in R that will extract the data from a given mvnx data file and calculate the step lengths.

Office Suits: Google Docs and LibreOffice for session protocols, task lists, tables, info graphics, …
Image and Video: The Programs PiTiVi, GIMP, ExifTool and UFRaw have been used for developing, organising, editing and converting videos and images.
Editors: Emacs, gedit and Vim with various modes, plugins and addons.
Source Code Management: SVN and Git as version control system and for source code management.
Documentation: YAML CSS Framework for the layout, jQuery as JavaScript library, Slimbox 2 for interactive loading of images and the TOC Plugin by Greg Gallen.

Programming Languages

gawk (gnu.org): Used in the Makefile to compile the html templates together with other data into the documentation website.
JavaScript: Used on the documentation website for interactive DOM manipulation.
R (r-project.org): Statistical scripting language used to parse and analyse mvnx data files and generate various diagrams.
